Falling in Love: An Autumn Engagement in Georgetown Part Two

Allison+Austin started their "love snaps" in Georgetown at some favorite little places of mine. I love Central Texas; it's full of surprising nooks and spaces excellent for telling stories through pictures. I still can't get over how many cute buildings there are -coming from Alaska where the OLDEST structures are, hm, three years old (okay, okay, 1919, but there's only one in Anchorage and the rest are from 1968 onward.) *Sigh* I love vintage, and happily I am surrounded by lovely old finds here in Texas.

Allison+Austin, like all of my couples who do engagement sessions, had 3 separate stylings. This was technically the 2nd, but I am so nuts about it I had to share it first.

Music is a major part of their lives, and they are both quite hip cats. I suggested a vintage/retro picnic theme -Austin brought along his records and player, I supplied the extras and they looked too fun for words -but that's what pictures are for! To express the inexpressible.

The Celebration at Schwertner Ranch: Reception

Jacqueline+Dan's weather-filled wedding turned out beautiful, despite the rain storm, and was a celebration steeped in love! It has been a joy re-living their wedding with them through the pictures. My goal as a photographer is to capture each wedding uniquely and creatively for the couple to treasure for decades to come. And it's a joy!

Sneak Peeks: Pure Country Engagement Session

What happens when you put a Texas cattle rancher and a mixed animal veterinarian from Oregon together? True love. This weekend I had the extreme pleasure of shooting with Heather and Clinton at some of the places dearest to their hearts: his family's ranch and their favorite swimming hole on the Cibolo River where they had their first date and Clinton proposed. He picked a good spot.

I had never been on a working cattle ranch. Actually, I had never been on a ranch. Period. It was amazing! I thought that cattle ranches just sort of, well, had cows roaming about, munching, and at certain times of the year they'd ship some out for my dinner, etc. No, no. That place is organized and has so much activity (and math -so much math, it makes my head hurt) -folks, ranching is tough! And the people who own and work their ranches are very impressive.

As I shot two sessions with them this weekend, Heather invited me to stay over instead of getting a hotel. I rarely get to have such quality time with my brides and it was wonderful having the opportunity to hear more about their love story, wedding plans, history and also assist in prepping for our shoots. I love helping my clients with wardrobe selection/accessorizing, locations and styling. Heather did an excellent job picking out their various outfits and we had some great girl time picking out the right jewelry for each look and matching Clinton's pearl snaps to her rhinestone cowgirl duds. I truly can't get over how fun it was getting to spend time with this couple and capture their pure country lifestyle. I feel much richer for having the experience.

I grew up in the Austin area, where I've developed a love of live music and an affinity for kitschy, vintage style. I also love crafting, cooking, dancing, LAUGHING (most often at myself), a little coffee with my sugar and cream, and thrift store shopping!

I'm wife to one, mom to three. I've spent the better number of my days for the past seven years managing my home and lovin' on my family, while freelance writing on the side. I also have a background in real estate and property management. I love customer service and bring a strong sense of organization to my professional roles.

The Rain Bride: A Schwertner Ranch Wedding

In the post of their sneak peeks, I shared that Jacqueline has a history of bringing on the rain for all of the milestone celebrations in her life. Her wedding was no exception -and it made all of Central Texas happy! After a summer of drought, the rain was welcome. Though it commenced to pour only minutes before the ceremony was set to begin, the lovely gals at Schwertner Ranch transformed the main room of the ranch into a ceremony site. It was a beautiful, intimate and touching wedding.

Adriana and Ray married yesterday in a beautiful celebration -what a story those two have! I'll have to share it with you when I start revealing their edits. So precious!

Now that Ray has already witnessed his bride in all her glory, I am now free to share with you one of my favorite bridal sessions of all time.

Adriana got her dress at Coccinella Bridal in Salado and the owner, Sue (she's wonderful!), custom made the straps on her dress, a Jasmine Couture of Jasmine Bridal collection.

The rustic locations make her stand out like the diamond and highlights the extreme elegance of her dress. I prefer contrasting my locations with my brides. Unless you have an elegant location that provides a lot of space and openness (a large entry way with a clean/undecorated spiral staircase, enormous front doors, etc.) the grandeur of each bride is diluted by her surroundings if they are too ornate or detailed. Here, in the vast openness and in the night shoot using vintage storefronts, Adriana gleams.

Still On Fire: Anniversary Session with Crystal+George

Dear Friends,
After the past two weekends filled with bridal shows and sessions in Dallas and beyond, I am very excited to announce that I will be expanding my area of photography service!

Shooting primarily in the greater-Austin area and San Antonio the past few years, we are already branching out into Houston and Dallas-Ft. Worth. With great joy, I will be serving brides all over Texas and beyond. We've expanded our wedding packages to include Out-Of-State and Destination Weddings. If you're looking for wedding weekend coverage, whether you live in Austin, TX, Austin, MN (which happens to be SpamTownUSA, consequently -who knew?) or getting married in the Tropics, I will be able to capture your wedding celebration from arrival to departure.

It's an exciting time! Projects I am currently working on include a featured editorial piece in The Society Diaries (a luxury publication for Austin, San Antonio and South Texas high living) featuring Paige's Bakehouse and styled by Sweet Sunday Events. I am also co-organizing the Central Texas Wedding Experience and Wedding Giveaway at Schwertner Ranch Event Center where we will be enacting a virtual wedding for brides and their families to experience some of the finest vendors in Central Texas doing what they do best -presenting stunning wedding days. Family portraits are in full swing as folks prepare for their Christmas cards, boudoir sessions are booking as ladies take advantage of our winter special for Christmas and Valentine's gifts. Additionally, my 2012 schedule is filling up as I meet with brides from the recent bridal shows in Austin and San Antonio.

My creative vision for my photography is taking new heights as I work with couples in creating styled sessions that tell their story. You can get good pictures done just about anywhere, but capturing your love story is what our goal is. From engagement sessions, bridal, boudoir and wedding day coverage, I want to work with you to create timeless images that truly hold the fire in your eyes, the magnetism of your relationship and the spirit of your celebration. For me, it is not enough to document. Together, we capture life at it's fullest.

When you think of Bridal Portraits, what comes to mind?

For me, Bridal Portraits are meant to be showcase pieces of art. You feel like a princess, you look like an angel, and you need locations that set you off like a diamond. No matter your style -dramatic, off-beat, classic or vintage- you can trust that we will pick locations and styling that truly let you shine.

Shooting in Texas, some of my favorite locations are the small, rustic, quiet towns dotted around major cities. These dusty, rugged main streets are a wealth of fascinating architecture and understated backdrops that, when mixed with the wide, open fields surrounding, make the perfect contrast to the brilliance of each bride.

Though rustic or country isn't everyone's cup of tea, you can still utilize landscape and stellar styling, like this session with Sweet Sunday Events, to create a truly breath-taking piece of art.

Each bride brings her own unique style to her portraits. Getting to know the bride's vision for her wedding, her personal style and utilizing unexpected locations are all part of making art pieces and capturing her bridal essence.

Top Tips for Bridal Portraits
1) Fabulous hair and make up! I can suggest several amazing artists who can come on location to do hair and make up to make your glimmer and gleam in your portraits.

2) Mani-Pedi. For those of you (like me) who rarely even think about how your fingers and toes look, go get pampered and invest in great nails. I do lots of detail shots and if toes are showing, let them shine! Fingers are an absolute must since we'll be featuring that ring as well as your bouquet.

3) Styling. Bring your portraits from amazing to out-of-this-world by hiring a designer to style your session. I highly recommend Sweet Sunday Events -they have all sorts of vintage rentals and oodles of creative ideas that truly make your pictures stand out. If you want to look straight out of a magazine, styling will make it happen -plus, you'll most likely have your session published on one of the top wedding blogs! (I submit and get published on a regular basis.)

4) Relax and enjoy yourself! This is your princess time and you should soak up each moment. Start practicing the song, "I Feel Pretty!" and we'll all sing it together :)

Reunion Ranch Wedding: Autumn Hues

Sneak Peeks: Mireya+Kevin's Unique Georgetown Wedding

There are couples I meet at bridal shows that I honestly hope, hope, hope I get to work with. This was one of them. I still remember meeting them nearly a year ago, how cute they were together, the things they were looking for in photography. When Mireya contacted me a few months ago as she began planning her intimate wedding, I was just tickled. It has been a treat working with her and Kevin in making their wedding day sparkle and creating art out of those timeless moments.

Yes, that's her wedding dress. And it's AWESOME. Mireya proudly stated that she's never been traditional, so why should her wedding be any different? She fell head-over-heels in love -with both Kevin and this peacock wedding dress.

Here are the sneak peeks of their intimate wedding. The ceremony was outdoors at San Gabriel Park's beautiful Butterfly Garden and afterward the couple and I took photos around Georgetown's historic square. Bride's, this wedding will change the way you look at smaller celebrations. Whatever your budget, whatever your ideal day, here's a great example of a bride getting exactly what she wanted and doing it her way.

Being petit and also wanted to change up this dress to have a corseted back and the straps removed, Mireya took it to a skilled seamstress who worked some serious magic.

Look at this dress! I mean, just LOOK at it! It's amazing. I'm rather fond of peacocks -but this dress takes it to a whole new level of LOVE.

How much do I adore this shot?
Yep, quite a bit.

Kristi and Jimmy are one neat couple. They both recently left their corporate jobs to start their own, both creating their own schedules and meeting their personal goals. As an entrepreneur, I always get excited when people go for their dream job after leaving the (relative) security of working for someone else. Both Kristi and Jimmy have strong ties to Georgetown and it was neat getting to shoot in several spots that held special meaning for them, such as the Georgetown Winery.

After we finished, it felt like I had spent the evening with friends -and, in my mind, I did. I am delighted to be their wedding photographer and look forward to Kristi's bridal portraits!

Decisions, Decisions: Choosing display shots for the Gallery & Bridal Shows

It's that time again, selecting a new round of display prints for my gallery and use at bridal shows. I usually spend a day deliberating and over-order anyway, but this time I've been contemplating shots for, oh, weeks... It can be a bit overwhelming trying to narrow down your work to 6 shots, and that's my goal. So, I thought I'd grab some of my favorites, post them here and stare at them long enough to make a decision on which 6 make the cut.

I just love this one. It's incredibly simple. It isn't flashy. It's just an honest moment of togetherness and their unison stride illustrates the connection perfectly.

Probably inappropriate to interject this goofy tidbit in the middle of such a sweet shoot, but...
Within 10 minutes of shooting I managed to introduce my backside to a cactus. Lordy, I didn't know they held so many tiny prickles -or how well they embedded themselves into jeans!
I honestly lived up to the line from "The Lion King," "Cactus Butt!"
Classic cowboy adage: Look before you squat.

And now for our second location. Wowsers, this was so cool! Excellent, excellent job, Sweet Sunday!

Alex and I are working together in a short film and when he hired me to be his headshot photographer I was, of course, very excited. Having seen his personality so alive through our hours of rehearsal, I knew THIS was going to be a fun shoot. Here are a few from this evening's shutter time.

On our way back to the studio from our last location shoot, we pulled over to capture the glory of golden hour. Though these are more along the lines of portraits than headshots casting directors want to see, they were our favorites to shoot.

Sneak Peeks: The Bride Who Brought Central Texas Rain

Jacqueline's dad said it: every major event in her life, it's rained. Her wedding was no exception. Texas has been in desperate need of rain, and though the storm threw the wedding plans for a loop, it turned out to be an immensely intimate, touching and beautiful ceremony -AND a great party at Schwertner Ranch Event Center!

Brothers in Arms: Portrait of A Family in Military Service

With deployment on the horizon and Troy's brother, Jonathan, getting out of the Marines in the Spring, a portrait session in uniform was in order. Plus, where more appropriate than at the state capitol?
Troy and his beautiful daughter Caroline stole some camera time together, as well.
Here are the precious shots I was honored to capture for this family of brave men.

Jessica and Devon's crisp wedding design utilized punches of red with canvases of black and white. I wanted to share some of their pre-ceremony wedding shots, featuring lots of details of their reception hall and the venue, Canyon Springs Golf Club in San Antonio.

Jessica requested that the shots of them getting ready be in black and white -they turned out beautifully. Brides, don't be afraid to ask your photographer if you have something specific in mind. We each have our own style, but I will happily incorporate your vision into the final pictures.

I'm an absolute sucker for vintage and antiques. When I do a post of my studio, we'll see some of the furniture pieces I fell head-over-heels in love with. I adore ransacking places like Rough & Ready Antiques and The Caring Place in Georgetown for some of the best, unique finds.

This is the spot we'll land after we take a tour of the lovely studio upstairs. Settle in for a glass of wine and some nibbles while you pour over bundles of books and get to know how I can best serve you and your photography needs.

Lauren and Joseph had their engagement session where Joseph proposed: Zilker Park. Vicky+Zach wed this weekend at Reunion Ranch near Georgetown, TX, and what a celebration! Their colors were a gorgeous shade of burnt orange (go, UT!) with warm complimenting yellows.

The family! Aren't they just adorable? I wanted to stuff those kiddlets in my pocket and take them home.

We took a break from pictures so dinner could be served, then right at sunset Vicky and Zach snuck outside with me and we had a relaxed several minutes of newlywed time. I adore these golden light pictures -and this lovely couple.

A terribly awesome stagecoach was parked inside the immense reception hall. Just had to set up an impromptu PortraitBooth and take some pictures with family and guests!

Red Hot Mama: How to Prepare for Your Boudoir Shoot

Boudoir photography captures an intimate celebration of love. It can be bold, tender, understated, vivid, and is always a wonderful experience to have. My clients often finish our session saying they felt like they just spent an afternoon at a spa and that it was so much fun, even for those who were hesitant at first.

If you choose to do a boudoir session, you don't need to spend months dieting or working out, nor do you need to spend oodles on a suitcase full of lingerie that you'll rarely wear again.

Here are some helpful tips I like to share with my clients before they have a boudoir session.

Great Make Up

Great make up is a must, so spend some extra time (or get it professionally done) so that you look stunning. False eye lashes are a great way to add a bit of extra glam. Think eyes, cheeks, lips -make sure you have all three, plus a great base of foundation (that matches your neck color, check for the "line" along your chin when you blend.)

Fabulous Hair

Don't go too wild on the hairspray. Natural with a little oomph. Great hair is just as important as fabulous make up, so if you think you need a little help with your hair, get it done or ask a friend who's gifted at it.

Wardrobe

Check to make sure you look great all around in the outfits you choose. You want to accentuate your favorite features and minimize any "trouble" areas. Make sure you try on your outfits in full before you get to the shoot and you're happy with it. Only bring items that are clean and look (at least) nearly new. A tired bra, shirt or undies are going to look tired in the picture.

Sexy doesn't necessarily mean less clothing. Here are some wardrobe or theme ideas:

Men's dress shirt (white is my favorite) paired with panties, loose tie optional, fedora is a fun one. Heels or bare feet.

Boyfriend/husband's favorite t-shirt with cute panties. Fun knee high socks add a cute element

Swimsuit in/by the pool

White sheet, wrapped up in

Shawl/cover up loosely wrapped in

Bra/pantie set

corset and panties (stunning -highly recommend, particularly for curvier figures)

Sheer shirt, tank top or camisole with panties

vintage night gown or slip

sexy costume

topless with casual jeans (use arms to cover breasts or lay stomach down.)

apron, panties and heels (recommend "cooking" props: cookbook, bowl and wisk, cake/cookies on a plate, etc.)

Props/Accessories

Jewelry: any thing from chunky to elegant. If you're going for a dramatic look, try rhinestone/costume jewelry, chandelier earrings, even a bracelet. Bring options and we can work with it. For an understated look, small earrings/studs and a simple necklace that has significance ads a really nice touch. You don't have to wear jewelry, but often it's lovely to add.

Shoes: Just as important as underwear! It's amazing what a splendid pair of shoes can do for a boudoir shoot. I'm a huge fan of barefeet, but those sultry heels do amazing things for a sexy outfit.

Hosiery: Thigh highs, fish nets, garters -great ways to add more touches to your look

Other: men's hats, masquerade mask, men's ties, fresh flowers/petals, vintage coca cola bottle(s), martini or other adult beverage in appropriate glass, hand fans, pillbox hats, feather boas (though I think these tend to be a bit over the top if not done correctly) big feathers, paper parasols, fruit (apples are great, add a lovely pop of color, but a bunch of grapes can look stunning, too.) Candy -big lollipops, cotton candy on a stick, licorice, etc.

NOTE: It is recommended to book your session as far in advance as possible, particularly if you are only available on the weekends. Photos are ready 2-4 weeks after your session. If you plan on ordering a book, expect two weeks for creation, ordering and delivery.)
